Stonetops is known throughout Hamilton and the surrounding areas for its expertise in the fabrication and installation of stone countertops. We often receive questions about quartz countertops. Here are some of the most common ones and the answers we give.

What’s the difference between quartz and stone?Quartz is a fabricated stone that consists of pulverized natural quartz and resin. Natural stone is removed from the ground and then cut into slabs that are polished. All holes are filled with resin.

Which is better quartz or stone?Quartz and stone both fill a need. Only you can decide which is better for you. Quartz has a consistent pattern and colour and requires no maintenance. It is also very resistant to scratches, stains, and heat. Stone is also fairly resistant to scratches and heat, but it does require maintenance. However, its patterning and colouring are natural and unique.

What is quartzite?Quartzite is natural stone that is cut to measure, while quartz is an engineered stone that can be moulded into custom shapes. Quartzite is very resistant to heat, but it is susceptible to staining.

What kind of maintenance does quartz require?Quartz does not require any maintenance above regular cleaning, which should be done with clean warm water and a gentle cloth or sponge. Do not use any chemical cleaners on your quartz. Sanitization can be done with 70% isopropyl alcohol cleaner or a Lysol disinfectant spray.

Do you do the plumbing?We attach your sink to your new countertop and make holes for the faucet. We do not attach water lines or put in your faucet. You can either do this yourself or hire a plumber.

Can we choose our own slab?Customers can choose to go to any of our suppliers and pick their own slab that we can then bring in.

What suppliers do we use?Our suppliers: Caesarstone, Mars Stone, HanStone, Vicostone Quartz Surfaces, Hilltop Surfaces, Silestone and Cambria Quartz Surfaces.

Are there different ways to clean stone versus quartz?Stone - use a pH neutral cleaner. Avoid using vinegar, lemon juice, harsh cleaners or abrasive materials as they can lead to damage. Stone requires resealing every so often depending on usage. Quartz - use a soft sponge and a mild soap. Do not use abrasive cleaners as they can dull the surface. Unlike stone, quartz does not require sealing.

What is the best type of stone for a kitchen or a bathroom?The best stone for your kitchen or bathroom is something you love. Quartz andstone are both durable surfaces that are suitable for a kitchen or bathroom. Natural stone is extremely durable. It can be porous and needs to be sealed before installation. Stone comes in a variety of colours and unique patterns. Quartz is a manufactured product made up of quartz minerals. It is very durable and comes in different colours and patterns. Quartz, unlike stone, does not need to be sealed.
